A slate table comes apart into a frame, a bed in sections and a set of rails, and the single most useful thing about a house here is whether the lower level opens out at grade. Lots around the lakes and out west slope, so a great many basements have a patio door on the low side that leads straight into the room where the table is going.

When that door exists the job is close to the easiest version of itself: no flights, no turns, no landing to wrestle a bed section round. When it does not, it is an ordinary interior stair and everything depends on the turn at the bottom. Either way it is the first question worth answering.
